Joyce Nelson

Joyce Nelson, CNM

Certified Nurse Midwife

Joyce has spent the majority of her life dedicated to serving others through the healing arts. Following in the footsteps of her mother, she became a nurse in 1984 and was a powerful presence of comfort to people during difficult times of illness. As she received her Master’s degree in Nursing and was recognized with leadership roles in her field, she had the unique experience of being able to witness both the capabilities and limitations of the current medical system. This was echoed in her own life as she experienced two Cesarean sections followed by a VBAC in a large teaching hospital before she had the privilege of delivering her fourth child at the family farm in the same room her mother and aunt were born in. These experiences blossomed into a desire to support and nurture other women safely through the natural lifecycle of the childbearing year without unnecessary interventions.Joyce became a midwife in 2000 and has attended home, birth center, and hospital births. She offers a voice of strength and wisdom to women as they embark on the beautiful journey of motherhood, whether for the first or tenth time. Joyce brings a presence of confident nurturing to laboring mothers which encourages women to embrace the miracle of birth in a safe and supported environment.

Christina Buchanan

Christina Buchanan

Certified Nurse Midwife

Christina has been attending birth for over 7 years, first as an L&D nurse at multiple DFW hospitals and then as a certified nurse midwife. She graduated in March 2016 from Frontier Nursing University with her Master’s degree. She also brings experience and wisdom regarding breastfeeding as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Her goal as care provider is to uncover how each woman defines “a positive birthing experience” and then support and guide her in safely achieving it. Clients have said her special gift is helping facilitate healing births for mamas who have had less than ideal past experiences. It is not uncommon to find Christina “bending over backwards” for clients, both literally and figuratively. She practices in a way that incorporates evidence, education and enthusiasm, while ensuring all of her clients feel empowered, valued and respected. She also is incredibly patient, enduring with moms through the long and hard labors. Christina loves discussing choices and believes in shared decision making to promote individualized wellness in birth, as well as across the lifespan. The most rewarding part of her job currently is having repeat families come back to her care to walk another pregnancy journey with them again.Christina was born and raised in Maryland but moved to Texas in 2011. She is married and has birthed both at home and at birthing centers – but always in a tub! In her free time, she enjoys going to fun, family events across the metroplex, bargain hunting and returning to the east coast to visit family and pick crabs!

Hali Tipton

Hali Tipton Hali is a mother of three. Her journey to midwifery began after the birth of first child. She received an epidural and had a “normal” hospital delivery, but something was still missing in her new mommy heart. With her second, she walked into the same hospital and denied their standard practices. The doctors didn’t know what to do, so they sent the Certified Nurse Midwife in. Never having met before, her midwife protected Hali’s autonomy, shared her hopes of experiencing childbirth the way it was intended, and brought a safe presence to an intimidating hospital environment. Hali was able to use hydrotherapy, have intermittent fetal heart rate monitoring, and give birth to her daughter naturally on her hands and knees. Her heart was filled and nothing was missing this time.Hali’s third baby was born in the water at Family Centered Maternity Care with Christina and Joyce by her side. Having experienced two hospital births, this was a healing victory! Her heart was more than full; it was overflowing with joy.She wanted to spread the love she had received, so she practiced as doula for one year before starting her midwifery education. Hali is now practicing as a Primary Midwife Under Supervision and encapsulating placentas at Family Center Maternity Care. As she nears the end of her training to become a Certified Professional Midwife, she continues to empower, love and cherish pregnant, laboring and postpartum moms.In her free time, Hali enjoys being with her family and close friends. She plans to continue her education and become a Certified Nurse Midwife when her youngest starts school.
